Diwali Festival in India

Diwali is a festival of lights, sweets, prosperity and happiness. In India Diwali is celebrated in the Hindu month Ashwin. There’s an ancient story behind the celebration of this lovely Diwali festival, it is believed that lord Rama was coroneted as king of Ayodhya, when he returned to Ayodya after killing Ravana the king of Lanka. In few parts of India diwali is also celebrated because it is on this day Mother Goddess destroyed a demon called 'Mahishasur'. This commemorates the victory of good over evil.

People in India have different beliefs and different styles of celebrating Diwali. Diwali festival is a sign of happiness and wealth. Diwali festival lasts for 5 days, on the first day of Diwali torans of mango leaves and marigolds are hung on the doorways. Hanging of torans is believed to bring good luck. Oil diyas are lighted in and around house, Because of these flickering lamps, the festival has acquired its name “Diwali” or “Deepavali”, meaning of Diwali is row of diyas.

Dhanvantari Trayodashi the second day of Diwali is Narak Chaturdashi. This is the day, when lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasur and freed mankind from his fear. On this day there’s a tradition to massage the body with scented oil and bathe. It is believed that those who do not bathe on this day go to hell (Narak).

Laxmi pooja is the third day of the Diwali, on this day, people worship their wealth.
Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, is worshipped on Lakshmi pooja day. Goddess Laxmi is the ruler of the eight kinds of wealth. It is believed by worshipping goddess Laxmi on this day, brings prosperity in household and life.

Fourth day of Diwali is govardhan pooja, on this day lord Krishna performed with the people of Vraja for their protection from heavy rains. Since then it became a tradition for Hindus to worship Govardhan Parvat to honor that first Pooja on this day.

Fifth and last day of Diwali is Bhai-dooj, this day is to celebrate the relation between brother and sister. The festival has different names in different regions of the country. It is called Bhaiya Dooj in the Hindi-speaking belt, Bhai Phot in Bengal, Bhau Bij in Marathi, and Bhai Tika in Nepal.
